Private Residence

West Cornwall, CT / 2009–2011

When a longtime friend approached up to design an addition to their country house, we jumped on it. Set on a beautiful, scenic property in rural Connecticut, the existing home (a converted barn) is uninsulated and ill-suited for winter living—it currently serves only as a seasonal retreat. Our plan is to build a one-story, detached addition to the house that the owners will use as the primary residence, leaving the older house intact as a seasonal guest house.

The new addition will utilize state-of-the-art modular building and glazing systems from Germany and Austria. Nearly every shell component of the house will arrive on site in a shipping container and anticipate erection will take days, rather than weeks required for conventional building. Simple, commonly available materials were careful detailed to achieve a modern, minimal aesthetic while adhering to a strict budget. The house has been fine-tuned for maximum energy efficiency and we hope to acquire LEED certification for utilizing sustainable building materials and practices.
